The End of Magnum P.I - Jay Hernandez Doesn’t Like Way Show Ended

Magnum P.I. concluded its final episode on NBC on Wednesday night, but Jay Hernandez, the lead star, expressed dissatisfaction with the ending. Hernandez, responding to a fan on X (formerly Twitter), mentioned that he suggested the idea of a standalone film to provide a more satisfying conclusion. Despite his reservations about the show's ending, he expressed gratitude to the #magnum #ohana for their unwavering support.

The cancellation of Magnum P.I. was announced by NBC, revealing that no additional episodes would be ordered beyond the 20-episode fifth season in June 2023. NBC considered three scenarios, including renewing for a sixth season, extending cast options, or ending the show entirely. Ultimately, the network chose the latter due to uncertainties related to a writer's strike and the unpredictable production timelines of scripted shows.

Kelly Kahl, CBS Entertainment president, previously cited licensing fee disagreements between CBS and Universal Television as a factor leading to the show's initial cancellation in 2022. This issue may have contributed to the show's second cancellation in 2024. Despite facing tough decisions, Kahl acknowledged Magnum P.I. as a great team to work with.

In an October 2023 interview, showrunner Eric Guggenheim disclosed that the series would end with a few unresolved cliffhangers intended to be addressed in Season 6. While Guggenheim acknowledged it might not be his preferred ending, he expressed pride in the finale and emphasized that it works well as a series finale without the need for reshooting or recutting.

As of now, there are several petitions to try and save Magnum P.I, with more than 10K signatures on Change.org.

Mr. Monk's Last Case: A Monk Movie - Review

he return of Adrian Monk to solve the murder of his stepdaughter's fiancé takes center stage in the Peacock original film, "Mr. Monk's Last Case: A Monk Movie." Tony Shalhoub effortlessly steps back into his iconic role, captivating audiences once again after the success of the television series Monk.

Having portrayed Mr. Monk for eight seasons and earning three Emmys, Shalhoub reprises his role after a 14-year hiatus. However, despite Shalhoub's outstanding performance, "Mr. Monk's Last Case" falls short of delivering the quintessential Adrian Monk experience that fans anticipated. It's likened to a tomato that lacks the sharp edges of perfection.

The film introduces Rick Eden (played by Purefoy), a villain portrayed as a second-rate version of Lex Luthor, diminishing the hero-villain dynamic. Eden's attempts to silence journalistic findings add an element of suspense, but the character lacks the depth required to make the conflict truly engaging.

One of the film's major disappointments lies in missed opportunities, particularly with the Monk/COVID concept. A black-and-white flashback featuring Monk in a HAZMAT suit during the pandemic hints at a more intriguing storyline that remains largely unexplored. The film's failure to "show" the impact of the pandemic on Adrian's life leaves a void in the narrative.

Fortunately, Melora Hardin's portrayal of Monk's dead wife, Trudy, adds emotional depth and thought-provoking moments to the film. Her interactions with the OCD detective contribute some of the most meaningful scenes in "Mr. Monk's Last Case."

In the end, the film feels like an attempt to capitalize on the popularity of the Monk franchise, rather than a genuine creative endeavor. While Shalhoub brings charisma and determination to the character, the lackluster script fails to provide a worthy opponent for Adrian Monk. Rick Eden comes across as a recycled villain, lacking the development needed to make him a formidable adversary for the brilliant detective. Despite James Purefoy's efforts, the character falls short of leaving a lasting impression.

Mr. Monk's Last Case: A Monk Movie is now available on Peacock.

NCIS: Origins - Ordered Straight to Series at CBS

CBS today announced a straight to series drama order for NCIS: ORIGINS for the 2024-2025 broadcast season from CBS Studios.

NCIS: ORIGINS begins in 1991, years prior to the events of NCIS and follows a young Leroy Jethro Gibbs, narrated by Mark Harmon. In the series, Gibbs starts his career as a newly minted special agent at the fledgling NCIS Camp Pendleton office where he forges his place on a gritty, ragtag team led by NCIS legend Mike Franks.

“We are elated and honored to continue the expansion of the NCIS universe in such a unique and unexpected way,” said Amy Reisenbach, president of CBS Entertainment. “Viewers can look forward to Mark Harmon returning to CBS to narrate the complex and mysterious backstory of Leroy Jethro Gibbs’ early years in NCIS: ORIGINS, which will build on the rich legacy of this character while reintroducing fan-favorite characters and meeting new ones.”

“There’s no denying the cultural and global phenomenon of the NCIS franchise for the last 20 years,” said David Stapf, president of CBS Studios. “When Sean and Mark approached us all with this exciting expansion of the universe – exploring a young Gibbs – we knew it was the next story that needed to be told. We also couldn’t be luckier to have Gina and David at the helm as co-showrunners who are not only brilliant and adept writers, but know this character and universe so well.”

“We’re thrilled to be bringing this new chapter to life along with Mark and Sean Harmon,” said executive producers and co-showrunners Gina Lucita Monreal and David J. North. “This really is the making of Leroy Jethro Gibbs. And even the most dedicated NCIS fans will discover that they don’t know the whole story.”

“The character of Gibbs has been an important part of my life for 20 years, both in watching my father craft the role and previously having the honor to play young Gibbs myself,” added executive producer Sean Harmon. “I always felt there was a tale worth telling about his earlier years, so I am thrilled to be stepping into a producing role alongside Gina, David and my dad as we tell this story and reveal a new side of this beloved character.”

NCIS: ORIGINS is produced by CBS Studios. Mark Harmon, Sean Harmon, David J. North and Gina Lucita Monreal will executive produce, with North and Monreal co-writing the premiere episode and serving as co-showrunners.
